Six Hours of the Glen

Featured Replies

I watched about 3 hours of the race today and then the network went to other programing, bummer.  IMHO, Watkins Glen is one the worlds most iconic road courses.  I was there for many a weekend.  Three Formula One races and several Six Hour endurance races.  Back in the seventies, the Six Hour endurance race weekend also included the CanAm race and Formula 5000 race.  So nice to see the "Boot" reopened.  Every year I hope and pray they run another USA Formula One there.  Doubtful, but a guy can dream.  Pretty sure psolk will agree.

I spent alot of time in Watkins Glen as a kid.  Never made it to the track, but enjoy the six hour and the NASCAR races as well.  Was disappointed when Indy left (again)...

What, no mention of the bog?

Yes, my bad.  I was there several times from a distance, the best place to be.  Pure mayhem, anarchy and unfortunately extreme violence.  They would literally pull people out of their cars or off their motorcycle and burn the vehicle.  I was not there when they burned the Gray Hound Bus.  I remember there was a reward for the perpetrators in the race program for the following years.  I heard mention they were from Brazil.  Nothing against race fans from Brazil, very passionate.

Here's a link to the very charred bus.

Just another little tidbit of information.  I believe at that time, Emerson Fittipaldi was the highest paid athlete in the world, a whopping 3 million dollars a year.  The good old days.

Hands down one of the most beautiful places in the world and the surrounding area is beautiful as well 😂

It is a real grown ups track, no forgiveness or margin for error at all.  Hands down one of my favorites!

The times they are running is unreal.  So my lap record was a 2:05, the prototypes are running in the 1:30's which means they will lap me every 4-5 laps LOL!!!

The town is wonderful, Lake Seneca is one of the deepest lakes in the country and the Gorge is an absolutely spectacular hike...

I thought you would like this Paul.  I can remember seeing one or two races without the chicane on the back straight.  Insanely high speeds on that long straightway.  Very fast road course even with the chicane.  It seems like today's F1 courses are mostly pretty tight with a few faster tracks.  What a dream to see them back at the Glen.

And you're absolutely correct, beautiful country side there.  Hiking the Glen is a must if you are ever there.  I've done a few motorcycle trips in New York state.  Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes, Adirondacks, all wonderful places to ride or just visit.

BTW, beautiful lap psolk!

Indeed!  I also took the motorcycle to Niagara Falls via Watkins Glen from here in NJ and yes, incredible riding!!  Up via Hawks nest and High point along the River and fabulous 2 lane 55mph back roads without a soul for miles instead of droning on along the highway!  Just don't make the mistake of being out riding after dark during Deer season!

Great thread and the 6 hour was a great watch this year.  Too bad the Porsche's were in BOP jail.  Can't believe how many cars they had on track!!  The traffic was insane.

It is a beautiful area.  It also is tied to my love of aviation.  Part of which came from my uncle that lived in WG.  He flew a Cherokee 160 out of a grass strip on the east side of the lake.  Several memorable flights, highlight was one to Niagra Falls Intl where he flew a few wide 360s over the falls on the way back.

In F1 the host must pay the fee for the race in full before the start of the season, and it`s not cheap.
