Why a 45 fps limit is a good idea (90 htz HMDs)

Featured Replies

As a follow up to my recent topic on Reprojection Mode, I posted new questions on the Flight Simulator forum about the timing of the spatial reprojection behavior that mbucchia mentioned in his original response.  My new post ended with a conclusion on how to reduce VR judder:  use a fps limit to run consistently at your HMD's refresh rate or a whole fraction of it, e.g. for a G2 90 (dream on), 45 or 30 (15...don't bother).  In mbucchia's response to my new questions, he agrees with my conclusion and provided a in-depth discussion about the tech on why it works that way.  Again, much thanks to mbucchia!

One nice side effect I have about using a 45 fps lock is it opened up a few FPS to give to either Ultra clouds or Quality DLSS...clouds won!  I tried limiting at 30 fps which allowed me to run TAA with Render Scale 110.  The effect was reminiscent of running 30 fps with Track IR and unfortunately at times was somewhat ugly.  Note that I'm using Reprojection Mode too.  Thanks for reading and that again you find this information useful.

I have 'locked' my frames to 45 using this https://github.com/Fragtality/DynamicLOD.

DynamicLOD adjust LODs automatically if the frame rate drops under 45 frames/second. It works perfectly.

Awesome, I will try it out today
