October 23, 20232 yr The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, in the Western U.S., equally majestic and rugged, but distinct and separate from its better-known sibling, the Rockies, has always fascinated me. Though I've visited the Rockies up/close, on several occasions, I've never visited the Sierra Nevada except overflying it in commercial flights...and always been on the lookout for it during such flights...🙂... There has been also one particular side-story, from the period of westward migration, that of the (ill-fated) Donner Party, associated with this Mountain Range. The event is regarded by historians as one of the most fascinating tragedies of the entire migration era, symbolized by extreme human endurance, heroism, and tragic consequences. In the spring of 1846, the Donner Party, consisting of 2 families, had started off from Springfield, IL, ~200 miles, south of here, headed for the (proverbial) West Coast in a Wagon Train. While 20 miles past Lake Tahoe (Shot #3), and missing, just by days, a safe passage across the highlands of Sierra Nevada, by an early and unexpected snowfall (Sierra Nevada means "Snow Capped"), the party got stranded, for the Winter, near Donner Lake next to the Donner Peak (both so-named later). The daunting and unforgiving Sierra had obliterated any traces of their (possible) trails, both in the forward and reverse directions. For this post, I've flown over the Donner Lake (see Shot #4) and the adjacent Donner Peak, though now in October time rather than in November, as for that party's perilous journey. Anyway, please find this set of pictures of what scenery I saw during my flight, as I've (virtually) traversed the entire length of the Sierras, from north to south, departing from Reno (KRNO) to Los Angeles (KLAX), skimming the ridge lines of the Sierra Nevada. Of course, the Donner Party had no amenities I've been entitled to, here, such as the Garmin GPS and the twin turbo-charged Diamond 62 (that the maker touts as "The ultimate flying machine"...) ....🙂...This plane, one of my perennial favorites, looks beautiful, flew beautifully and also landed beautifully... Thanks for viewing. Good flying. Edited October 24, 20232 yr by P_7878
