Unstable Dynamics In X-Plane, Can't Damp Them Out

Featured Replies

I'm having serious problems trying to get X-Plane to work properly.

Imagine flying any aircraft in straight and level flight and having the nose constantly bob up and down and sway from side to side like a heavy weight on springs and you've got the picture.  This motion is impossible to damp  out by with trim. I'm also getting a phantom constant roll input at times for no apparent reason that requires opposite aileron to keep the aircraft level.  Sometimes, this shows up  on the turn-and-bank indicator as a sideways push  even if the airplane is parked engines off and not moving. Asymmetric thrust on a twin engine airplane helps  to, but I shouldn't have to do that just to fly normally.

It's not engine torque, p-factor, adverse yaw, or any of that.  I'm a real life pilot and I know what those effects are.  This is different.  It doesn't matter if the engines are on or not and it happens in a glide power off.

I've changed yokes ,tried many different aircraft models, checked all the control mappings, tried changing input curves and control sensitivity, etc.  Nothing works.

So, unless there's an invisible barn door sticking out of the airplane causing it to fly wrong, I don't know what's going on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm at my wits end.

I'm using X11.52 from Steam with XEnviro., Honeycomb Alpha Yoke, and Saitek Cessna rudder pedals and trim wheel with multiple throttles and radio panels.

Go into your settings->General section

Under "FLIGHT MODEL", if your flight models per frame is set to 1 or 2, try increasing it by 1, and testing the aircraft again.  If it stays unstable, keep increasing the number until it stabilizes.

Pc specs would be nice

This was my first time simming in XPlane 11 with my Honeycomb Alpha Yoke and the first thing I noticed is that with the default XPlane controller setup the plane was shaking like crazy. I decided to set up my yoke from scratch and not only did it stopped the shaking, I was able to set the curves and the planes not flare much better than with my previous yoke. I will also try the advice on this thread.

I'm now in sim heaven thanks to MSFS 2024 and hundreds of add-ons!

Can you provide a video? (XP has an inbuilt video recorder). Maybe we can more easily help that way.

Also,

make sure you also disable all 3 stability augmentation sliders, by pulling them full left.

What aircraft are you using ? You could choose a single one for your tests - say, the default C172.

Also, try it out with and without the "Experimental Flight Model" ticked in the General options menu.

Here's a test video.  It might be a crosswind/turbulence gain too high problem.  This is in the Carenado Piper Seneca V over Molokai, HI.  The wind force is higher than what it should be to be realistic.  Anybody who has flown a light aircraft over a big parking lot in the summer around a shopping mall knows how bumpy a flight can be or under cumulus clouds but it's not enough to flip the aircraft almost upside down or shake it like a dog with a rabbit.

I think it's normal turbulence, likely modeled by xEnviro in the vicinity of cumulus clouds (albeit quite severe turbulence, judging from the video).

Maybe xEnviro overdoes that? In any case, try disabling xEnviro and check if it disappears. If that is the case, you can then check if xEnviro has settings to decrease or eliminate turbulence.

In real life it can be even more severe I reckon. Look at this from 5:50 to 6:50 :
