Does P3dv5 require better hardware than XP11 to run smoothly

Featured Replies

There isn't really a neutral sub forum to post this question in but from those who use both XP11 and p3dv5, would it be fair to say that p3dv5 generally requires a stronger pc to run smoothly? With DX12 and Vulkan of course this improved things, but I feel like I still have to dial my settings down quite a bit in p3dv5. Both sims look great with high settings, but I think p3d offers more customization with how far you can push the sim (just look at the settings page in each sim). Maybe its the addons as well, but even though I can make p3d run smoothly, there still stutters that show up every so often. I don't know how much FSX code is still left in p3d, but I can't help but feel like this maybe the reason for that. On the contrary, I haven't really seen any stuttering in XP11 except for when there was an incompatible plugin/addon installed.

With the "same" image quality settings and hardware they run about the same. It's a bit hard to exactly match up every IQ setting in both sims and my conclusion is based solely on my hardware. YMMV.

XP11 is generally run with less complex add-on scenery and aircraft though. I'd say MSFS runs a little better than either P3d5 and XP11 and looks a lot better than either. The performance of all three sims is primarily limited by the screen resolution that you choose (4K, 2K, 1080p) and the GPU that you have installed. VR also taxes each sim differently. CPU is generally a smaller factor in performance of these flight sims than is the GPU.

Seriously, MSFS runs better???

Most people seem horrified by that sim’s current performance. From just one thread i was reading earlier this evening:

‘Will think about buying things when they fix the FPS downgrade created by this last update.”

“You were getting fps?”

“I’m glad I’m not alone in this. FPS is often fine, but the micro stutters just totally ruin it for me.”

“Pretty disappointed to say the least. Seems like the game ran perfect a week or so after release and they’ve just steadily ruined it since then.”

I’ve been flying the (very complex) pmdg 747-8i this week in VR with smooth performance. Try that in MSFS VR with systems-lite 747-8i as a comparison, even with the settings turned way down. Performance is bad, to the point of being unusable,.

MSFS looks pretty, but it’s the weakest performer of the currently-available sims.

As someone who flies MSFS (yes, i fly it), x-plane and p3d I would say that x-plane had the best smoothness before p3d v5 came out. I’d now say that v5 and xp11 are pretty close, though with my settings I get better airliner flying in P3D v5 than i do in XP11 with the FF767 or the Zibo.

The biggest mystery to me is how I can use 8X SSAA in p3dv5 with no performance drop, but in X-Plane the highest I can use is 4X SSAA. For some reason though X-Planes anti-aliasing does not seem very good. Still lots of "jaggys" on the horizon when you look around at the airport.

I don't think that's my experience, just parked with a c172 doing nothing with clear skies and no AI my GPU is at max and VRAM at 95% that's not the case with P3D, flying the A2A with Active Sky with lots of AI traffic I rarely go over 65% vram.
