Motion Platforms

Featured Replies

With this amount of realism you only get to crave more and more immersion. That's how I felt when I got Aerofly FS2 and led to me buying a motion platform. Now this just takes it to a whole new level. How frustrating though when AeroFly pulled the plug on the SDK which provides the telemetry data for motion platforms. Thanks Microsoft for telling us the cockpit builders will be happy. I know motion platforms are a tiny tiny segment of the user base but a small mention as to whether they will be supported would be appreciated. In fact with a sim this realistic the demand for platforms will surely increase - home and commercial.

I would certainly get one if I could afford it 🙂

Coupled with next gen VR and this sim, heaven!

oh, didnt knew that!

A naive question. How does a motion platform mimick the play of opposing forces when  you bank the plane ?

For a simple, 3 DOF platform / gaming chair like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El3TDXQrV6U, there's a hard stop.
i.e. When you roll or pitch all the way to the end of the piston's travel, there's no further movement possible to give the sensation of force being exerted. Instead it relies on gravity to trick the inner ear into feeling a directional force.

For a much more complicated 6 DOF platform like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3TdDSGQG3c, there's usually a self-centering mechanism. Once the initial sensation of accelleration is calculated to have subsided (i.e. back at 1.0G), the platform impercetibly returns to the netural / centre position ready to tilt / turn / roll to mimick the next movement.

Starts from only €320k - an absolute bargain if I win the lotto!!
