What's a good size SSD to get for Prepar3d v4?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about upgrading to an SSD for P3D. But I'm not sure what size to get. I'm looking at the 500GB and the 1TB. Is the Samsung 850 EVO  2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD any good? It seems to be the best seller on Amazon.

Do you think 500GB would be enough, I have a lot of add-ons and I want to be able to fit everything and also have some leftover room for peace of mind.

The 1TB is $340 and the 500GB is $175.

I have the 1TB Evo and it is perfect. Anything that gets INSTALLED goes on that drive - the actual zip files, etc are on a storage drive.

If you have the budget - get the 1TB - you won't regret it.

1TB is good if you don't plan to install a lot of PR scenery, if you plan to do A LOT of PR scenery then I'd recommend 2TB ... I'd also recommend going with M.2 Samsung 960 PRO NVMe drives or the M.2 Samsung 960 EVO NVMe ... performance wise there isn't much of a difference between the 960 EVO and the 960 PRO.

If you are looking for old school SATA6 SSD then Samsung 850 EVO or Samsung 850 PRO.

In terms of actual performance for P3D ... I haven't noticed any difference at all between any of the above (I do have all the versions and tested all the versions), slightly faster initial loads times with M.2 and slight faster aircraft display (aircraft selection screen if you have large collection of aircraft).  M.2's do tend to boot a little faster.

If you go the Samsung route, make sure you install the Samsung Magician software as it will allow you to update the firmware to latest and you can enable additional drive features ... in some cases the firmware updates provided considerable performance gains.  But as you know (or may not know) SSD/M.2 all have a finite life and their performance starts to deteriorate over time which isn't necessarily the same as their MTBF rating (which is usually around 1Million - 2Million hours) .. but if you have the Magician software installed it should help minimize degradation over time.

Cheers, Rob.

2 1TB's 850 Pro. One for the OS and one dedicated for the sim. Should never run out of space...
