September 14, 201213 yr As above? Tried out the XPX demo last night and have a few thoughts about it.
September 14, 201213 yr Go ahead, or, should you prefer, PM-me :-) I know both worlds :-) Both are good anyway... I really prefer X-Plane10, by far, but probably because what I find more important in a flight simulation platform is better represented in X-Plane than in FSX/P3D... Other users with different expectations can easily find FSX/P3D better. The ideal is to be able to profit from both. I can't... For me it has to be one at a time :-) P.S.: On 2nd thoughts, the moderator may not find it good to start here a thread on FSX vs X-Plane.... September 14, 201213 yr Commercial Member I don't think the mods mind if you show genuine curiosity with an open mind. As long as it's respectful and courteous, no one should have a problem.
September 14, 201213 yr Everything is allowed as far it's not forbidden. Don't wait for a mod to allow you to speak out your mind. My opinion? Both sims have their advantages, FSX- addons still make me gape and they will keep FSX/P3D alife for quite a while. I like the smoothness and the approach of X-Plane (simulating forces) on the other hand. But I miss the AI/ATC and great airliners of FSX. Sometimes I shake my head about the shortcomings of X-Plane in usability (stupid ATC, not saving enough data e.g., some UI-matters), sometimes I'm thrilled by the improvements that are going on almost every week etc. etc. You see? Flo Flo B.

September 14, 201213 yr Author  I wasn't a very long go on it (you can thank my 6 month old for that  ) but my initial thoughts were... 'Living world' system - love it. Really impressed by the road traffic, and at night the road lighting is jaw-dropping. Definitely adds to the immersion. Autogen is very detailed and doesn't pop up. Lighting generally is very good (flicked between night and day a few times). Good and varied camera system. Curved runways are good but the mesh on the demo made Seattle (I think) seem a more like a set of straight lines rather than a smooth curve, if you see what I mean. Not too impressed with the default B744 compared to the default FSX one (I can go into the reasons). Still capable of bringing a 3.6GHz i7-3770K to its knees framerate wise (granted my graphics card isn't up to much, so maybe it's that). However, I do feel like I've seen the future of flight simulation. What are people's reasons for switching to XPX, or for those that have both, deciding that hey, this evening I will play XPX, not FSX? Hope that was balanced enough!
September 14, 201213 yr It surely is balenced enough :-) Well, IMO, my decision was based on the following: - Being a dynamic, under constant development, platform, with the devs listening to their user community and always trying to implement those features that are widely asked for, or bugs/limitations people complain about and know how to properly describe. X-Plane10 is now on 10.10 RC1, and will become 64 bit most probably in the next release, with all of the advantages it will certainly bring (I hope :-)) - Offers a unique aircraft flight dynamics editor, far more powerful than anything you can use (not default because that doesn't actually exist after AAF being discontinued long ago by MS...) such as Abacus, AirEd, AirWrench, AAL, etc... - There is no other non-military simulation platform where you can have plausible simulation of rotary wing, and great helicopter add-ons, like in X-Plane... - The same applies to orbital / sub-orbital spaceships, "lighter than air", and mostly any non-standard aircraft you may try to design / experiment. X-Plane10 is an excellent platform for project testing :-) - The Atmosphere is modeled according to standard values but very plausibly up to the exosphere and outer space, thus, orbital flight physics are in work when you use the proper models... - Most of what you referred to regarding scenery plausibility, even lacking seasonal textures for now (may change in the future...). I fly gliders for real, but have had the chance to jumpseat or even fly on the right seat of some GA and airliners. On night / day approaches to an airport inside or nearby a town, X-Plane10 is unique in it's realism, MSFS being really far from reality, unless you get Orbx scenery (but I don't know for sure because have never seen one for Lisbon...) - Speaking of gliders, not being as detailed as specific sims like Condor, SW or SFS, X-Plane10 offers a very plausible soaring environment, dynamic and including mountain and thermal lift... FSX includes a very crude model of thermal, and an even more clumsy model of ridge lift.... I will add to this list later today if I find the time... Very busy right now :-/ Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
