Hi Dave, I'm gonna guess at Renton Municiple or Sea Tac... It's so dark I can't really see, apart from some buildings. Although I've had the sim for a year, so should be fairly used to it by now! Where you airborne or not? Anyway, I've played about with the arrows on the HSI and set them to the correct frequencies for each of my destinations but the green arrow won't point to the runway. You said that's the ILS, right? But even with the correct VOR1/ILS (2nd one down on the transponder) frequency it points in the completely opposite direction! How strange! The double blue one works fine, but that's controlled by VOR2 though... I'm confused again! Do you use another sim now? How do you download other airports? Cheers, TiggCJ

Hi.

It's so dark I can't really see, apart from some buildings.
You don't need to see what's around you; that's the point of using the instruments. All the info you need is in the picture. In fact, all the info you need is in NAV1: 19 nm at 260° from VOR SEA 116.80
Where you airborne or not?
Not with no airspeed- no helicopters in FU3.

Which airport, which runway, which plane, what distance from the threshold, and what frequency did you use?You have to turn the NAV1 pointer to the same heading as the runway: if it's RY19 then turn the arrow to 190°, if it's RY04 then turn it to 040° et c. Now that I've told you that, go and read this link. It's the one I posted earlier.http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/ils.htmTake some time over it. I really mean it... read it! It explains how to use VOR, NDB and ILS beacons and explains better than I can. I don't mind expanding on what's there but I don't see any point in duplicating it.
Do you use another sim now?
FS9
How do you download other airports?
Google 'Avsim Library' and register. It's free, just like this forum. But... if you have a spare ten quid... as admin point out it helps to keep the server running. When you're in, change the category to Looking Glass Flight Unlimited 3 and you're away.Regards,D

Hi Dave, Right, I thought it might have been SEA. The frequencies used were (for one of them): Radio: 126.95, 121.60, 124.70, 127.75, 120.60, 119.20, 118.50, 121.80 VOR1/ILS: 109.10 VOR2: 109.60 NDB: 0216 Squawk: 5517 Can you guess where I flew from and to? Basically, the ILS was set at 109.10 and I used the autopilot and watched the green arrow but it pointed in the opposite direction. The blue one was fine though. I'll have a look at that link, thanks! Cheers, TiggCJ

Hi there again, Sorry of no word recently, I've been over busy! What I'm trying to figure out is why the VOR1 arrow (colour green) didn't point towards the runway, when the ILS was set correctly and autopilot was following it! It just seems a bit strange... Cheers, TiggCJ

Hi again.I bet it's warm down your way today! Answer each one of these questions:What plane? What airport? What runway? What frequency did you tune NAV1 to?If... you were in the Beechjet, which green arrow? If you answer all of the above I'll have some idea of what was going on and ought to be able to give you a useful answer. (Sorry, this is all from memory again).... ... ...If you can, set the flight up again & do a screenshot. If I recall correctly I think Ctrl+Alt+P (all three toghether like Ctrl Alt Delete) puts a screenshot in the Flight3 folder, possibly called flight3001.bmp or something similar. Uploading it is easy.Cheers,D

Hi Dave, Yes, lovely weather! What about you? Plane: Beechjet Airport: Tacoma Narrows Runway: 17 Frequency for NAV1: 109.10 I didn't know there was a second green arrow however I was watching the green arrow that has a single stem and a single, sort of triangle head and two short single green ends, if joined together horizontally, they'd be another triangle. It was, of course, located on the HSI. I will try and do that screen shot for you... bit rusty on my computer things, but should be able to do it! Thanks again, TiggCJ

Hi.I'll have a play around with that approach this evening and see what I come up with. I don't remember any fault there- I used to fly in and out of Tacoma Narrows quite often and I suppose the airport and the ILS are OK since the autopilot follows the approach correctly.I wonder if you've made a mistaken assumption about how CDI works. You must manually turn the needle to point in the appropriate direction and the middle bar shows then whether you need to go further left or further right in order to be lined up.Bear with me until tomorrow and all might (with luck) become clear.Cheers,D

Hi there Dave, Before I go and do the screen shot (my computer's a bit funny anyway) how do I get it saved and put onto a post for you to see, what are the basic procedures if you can tell me? Cheers, TiggCJ

Good morning.Just as above. While you're flying press Ctrl+Alt+P and FU3 will dump a screenshot into your main Flight3 folder. The file is a bitmap and it will be called something like flt3000.bmp. The next will be flt3001.bmp... flt3002.bmp... flt3003.bmp et c.You can't attach bitmap images in a post because they're too big so you will have to open the picture (with something like Paint) and re-save it as a jpeg.To attach the pic to a post click on 'More Reply Options' at the bottom of where you type when writing a post, and the attachment tools appear beneath where you're typing. Browse to the jpeg, click 'Open' and click on 'Attach This File'. The pic will appear as a thumbnail; just click on 'Add to Post'.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Anyway, the following, knocked up last night, might help you with your ILS approach:I can turn the course select indicator by using the CDI knob, left-click-and-dragging the knob to turn the course select indicator to the appropriate heading. If I just turn it any old where the course deviation bar doesn't show anything useful: If I turn it to 170° (that's the runway heading) the bar has slid out to the left. That tells me I need to go left to line up with the runway. You can see that's correct: the runway is visible... on the left: In the third picture, I'm too far to the left. That's made the bar slide to the right to show me I must also go right to line up: By this point, messing around to take pictures, it's obvious that I'm not going to make a successful landing... I should have been lined up about 10 miles out and just held things steady thereafter.Cheers,D

Hi there Dave,

Thanks so much, that's very helpful! I'm going to practice that now! I'll keep trying at those pictures. Could I find the Flight3 folder in my documents or something? If not, whereabouts?

Thanks again!

Hi,

Also, what is DH (decision height presumably) for and why/how do we use it?

Thanks again,

Hello again.

I'm grumpy this morning... I had a long day in Snowdonia yesterday and I ache.

Decision Height is something you set as a reminder when you are making an ILS approach in poor visibility. It gives a warning when you are at the set height above the ground. That will be the point at which you decide whether or not to land, based on how clearly you can see the runway. The height that you set is taken from the relevant approach plate for the airport.

You can set it to the appropriate height with the DH knob.

Your Flight3 folder is the one that was created when you installed FU3-- it's the one that the FU3 program is in.

Cheers,

D

Hi Dave,

What is the plate for the airport (whichever one) and how do I detect that/base the DH upon it?

Hope you feel better after Snowdonia, some of my friends have been there before, it sounds like hard work!

Cheers,

TiggCJ
