Coastlines and mesh

Hi Scott. Thank you! That's the most comprehensive description I've seen of the steps required for modifying scenery. It really ought to be pinned somewhere as a quick reference. I shall have some fun with SBuilder over the next few weeks... my ability so far extends only to making & modifying airports with ADE, adding autogen with the SDK, and disabling odd bits of vector coastline. I'll be looking forward to your upload too. Thanks again.D

FWIW I did complete the project based on a level of effort and it is here:http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=162879I included the project files (and some background aerials which made the download a bit larger) in case anyone wants to play around with it some more. I think it is an improvement on the default at any rate.scott s..

I would be interested in any feedback on how it looks with other mesh installed.scott s..

I had FSGenesis S. America installed but as Dave pointed out it appears there's no coverage for the island. Here's the .bgl list I had active at the time:fsg_samerica.txtJim

Hi Scott,I have FS Global '08 and FS Genesis base available on my PC. I'll see if I can get half a dozen comparison pics together tonight & post in the morning. Your mesh looks at first sight to be comparable to the Global but the detail will be in the screenies...Cheers,D

Hello again.I spent some time last night slewing around Crusoe taking pictures then went off to have some fun around the pinnacles on the west coast of Selkirk. I got back to Crusoe just as the sun set. Mmm... a tropical island with a cold beer waiting. This time of year, the real world holds no better than a cold island and warm beer. The new water and coastline polys are most important to me, fine detail and a true God-send, as they are in the correct location and so match FS Global.Global with default coast:Scott's package:It's clear that there's little to commend FS Global over Scott's mesh. There's slightly more detail in small areas of Global; observe the pinnacle in the centre of the pictures below, and the half-shadowed hill immediately behind that. However, the mesh squares in the map are the same size in each case, suggesting the differences result from different sampling methods, presumably at the same resolution. Global shows through so I suppose it was compiled to a (redundantly) higher LOD.Default scenery:Default coast with Global '08:Scott's package:Default coast with Global '08:Scott's mesh:I didn't bother with Genesis as it doesn't cover the islands.I put the SCIR_ADE9_S15017_ALT.bgl way down in layer 2, a custom folder where I already have several *_alt.bgl and some duplicate afcads to force AI into complying with some bad payware & freeware airports. I understand that AI works from the bottom up and adopts the first airport elevation it finds so that's where I put all the corrections. The only fault I can find with the package is that it's so good I no longer feel compelled to teach myself how to make such things! Still, we're into the season of long evenings in the northern hemisphere so I'll have plenty of opportunity during the forthcoming months. My thanks again.D

Thanks for taking the time to take some shots. I downloaded the ASTER v2 data from NASA, and while it appears to have more resolution, it also has many data voids and other abnormalities. I think there may be a way to use srtm data in the areas where ASTER is wrong, but I don't know an efficient way to do it. I know FS Genesis has been working with ASTER data but it seems to be a slow process based on product announcements.scott s..
