Nice review of MAAM R4D-6 in Pilot Mag

Featured Replies

This months issue of the UK Pilot magazine contains a full, two page review of the MAAM package by Andrew Herd, with pictures and references to MAAM's website and (ahem!) the other place for downloads. No mention of Avsim though.Only strange thing, AH claims in the article to have no knowledge of the amphibious version and that there was `no trace` of it on the CD he was sent. Did you not release the amphib to Flightsim? Might be worth an e-mail to clarify to the publishers - who seem to be becoming more receptive to flight simulation now that their competitor publishing house has purchased Computer Pilot and is marketing it alongside their mainstream flying mags.Allcott

Thanks for the headsup . . . I do not have this publisher's email which precludes me pointing out their omissions; however, both sites you've mentioned have XC-47C repaints (based on repaint templates by Mark Beaumont and original textures by Jan Visser) repaints for download.MAAM-FREESTUFF

Hi Alcott,There's an easy explanation for the lack of mention of the XC in Andrew's review. Take another look at that mag cover and I thing you will find it was the Oct 2004 issue of Pilot, not 2005. Dr. Herd did get a CD that did not include the amphibian, since it had not yet been added. You can hardly blame the good doctor for leaving out the Avsim URL, considering his affiliation with a certain other FS site. ;-)You can see a reproduction of the entire Pilot review, along with many others, on our MAAM-SIM Reviews and Awards Page: http://www.maam.org/flightsim/Reviews/reviews.htmBill RambowMAAM-SIMhttp://www.fssupport.com/maam/maamsim_neon.gif

If you're curious, there's a nice write-up of MAAM's WWII Weekend in the October 2005 edition of MILITARIA INTERNATIONAL magazine. No mention of the sim planes, but a nice overview of the rest of the museum's activities.

It's a real-world aviation title I've had a subscription to for several years, and it's mailed directly to me every month, so I know there's no mistaking the date - of course it could be old copy in the magazine, but why add the vague and obtuse mention of the Amphibian and not point out it's downloadable? Andrew is normally very thorough in his observations and for him to have failed to mention the amphib is downloadable after mentioning it at all seems very strange in what it in all other respects a thorough review.Allcott

Hi Allcott,That's VERY interesting! I wonder why Pilot would run stories about us in successive years - or why Andrew would submit them? It's not like he doesn't have other FS subjects to write about. Not that we are complaining, mind you! :-)Would you compare it to the one I have archived on our pages, please? If it is different, I would very much like to have a scan of it.Andrew may be working from that old CD, and I will straighten him out and send him the latest editions, if he does not have them. Andrew has always been a supporter of our efforts and very complimentary about the packages, so I'm sure the error about the XC is unintentional. I'll scan them at work tomorrow and e-mail them over!Allcott

Just to let everyone know I've sent this to Bill and the team, and it should be up for viewing soon!Andrew Herd must have had the shortlived Version 7 of the software, which was quickly replaced by Version 8 which includes the amphibian.A friend of mine has already written to the mag to correct the error, but I'll shoot them an e-mail too!Allcott

Hi Allcott and all others,The review is now posted... http://www.maam.org/flightsim/Reviews/reviews.htmThanks again for the scans. While looking over the magazine's website and its flightsim section I found to my surprise that a review of 'Briefing Time' that I did not know existed was published back in January of 2003. Does your collection run back that far? I would love to have that one as well, if you can find it.Bill RambowMAAM-SIM http://www.fssupport.com/maam/maamsim_neon.gif
