Touring NWA's 752 CPT sim with BBall757! part 1

Featured Replies

First of all, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Luke, a 1st year aviation-major student at St Cloud State University, Minnesota, USA. I used to frequent the avsim.com boards until they switched to the new format around early March 2003. But I'm sure you guys don't want to hear all of this mumbo-jumbo, so I'll get right on to the juicy part that interests you all. :-)I know BBall through frugalsworld.com , and about a month ago we managed to arrange a tour at the Northwest Aerospace Training Company (NATCO) building, to check out their sims and all. And since I normally live only 45 minutes from him, I drove down and met up with him and a friend of his. And so we drove off to the NATCO building to check out the sights. :-)We checked into the building, and proceeded to the 757-200 Cockpit Procedures Trainer. On the corridor that leads up to the 752 CPT, are windows that peer into the large caverns that house the "big toys", the multi-million dollar full-motion simulators!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50900.jpgIIRC, this one here is one of the 744 full motion sims. You're staring through a window that has a sort of "net" strewn across inside it. The drawbridge to the left is in the "up" position, indicating that the sim is in use.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50902.jpgHere we are looking down on the floor of the sim, and the mighty hydraulic jacks that make the beast stay up and move about. As I took the picture, BBall was explaining how wearing seatbelts at all times when sitting in this thing is a requirement. He told of a story of how one day they lost power, and through the faliure of a few other safety mechanisms, the full motion sim came crashing down. One of the crewmembers on board didn't have their seatbelt on, and was thrown about inside the sim. The sad and unfortunate end result was that this crewmember had to be taken to the hospital, and lost their medical.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50903.jpgHere we are looking at the "divider wall" between one full motion sim and the other on the far end of the cavern, which I believe was a DC-10-30. And in the reflection on the window, you can see BBall757 on the left and a friend of his. :-)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50904.jpgAnd then we proceed down the hallway, go downstairs, and enter the 757-200 CPT sim. This is a stationary simulator with no visuals, but I'm not complaining! Good chance to practice those CAT IIIa ILS landings!:D The flight deck that you see up front is fully modeled with everything you need to fly the plane. The office chair to the lower left is the instructor's chair, so that he can have a nice, comfortable place to sit, relax, and sip coffee as he watches various flight crews deal with near-impossible emergencies that he'll set up on his control console. :Dhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50908.jpgHere's a close-up of the flight deck. As you can see, everything that you would encounter on a normal NWA 752 is more or less there. Headsets, moveable seats, and rudder pedals that require your FULL FORCE just to move them! :-eek All of the required flight manuals are just off the picture, behind the Captain's seat. One thing that I noticed was that the flight deck had that "worn" and "scratched" feeling to it, like it has been used and abused for hundreds of thousands of hours already...which I'm sure it was. :DAnd that's it for part one. I'll post up part two sometime tommorow. Hope you guys enjoyed this! And I'd like to thank BBall for making this possible. Thanks! :-)

Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing them. This would sure make a nice home cockpit. I don't think it would fit in my living room though...
