May 12, 201313 yr Hello, This year's US Open Street Map conference will take place in San Francisco next month, and i will be presenting a session on open street map and flight simulation. The main objective of the talk will be to show how flight simulation can be improved thanks to osm data, differents approachs, pro/cons etc... I will of course talk of my own experience of osm/flight sim with osm2xp, and I'm thinking of a slideshow of end users screenshots at the end of the talk, during questions/answers. So if you're using osm2xp and have some nice screenshots of it, you can post them here/mail them to me at (osm2xp -at- gmail.com). I will be adding a short description on screenshots, with location/aicraft , and your forum pseudo (or your real name if you want). If you have something positive to say about osm in flight sim or osm2xp, i'll add it too . Something like that: Cessna 152 over San Francisco "Osm is so cool blablablabla" By MdMaxx If you're interested in coming to the conference, here's the link of the event : http://stateofthemap.us/ leave me a message if you're planning on coming Cheers Ben
May 12, 201313 yr Good luck Benny, I'm sure they will be impressed and thanks for all your work with Xplane! Simmo W, Melbourne, Ozhttp://www.youtube.com/user/id5556
May 12, 201313 yr Great news Benny. Just use every screenshot you want from me: http://ggka.online.fr/xp/ http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/tags.php?tag=osm2xp http://forum.avsim.net/tags/forums/osm2xp/ Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -

May 13, 201313 yr What kind of HD size footprint does OSM scenery in X-Plane use? Orbx's upcoming FTX Global and their OpenLC land class product will use OSM data, and it's stated it will use 8.5GB disk space for the entire planet. Looks like OSM is the future for both sims!!! Here's what Chicago will look like http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/58911-ftx-global-sweet-home-chicago/ Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d

May 13, 201313 yr Great involvement Benny ! You can take any of my shots of Paris: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/391475-xplane-10-64bit-first-experiments-dr400-over-paris/ Right now, I'm tinkering with modifications to the base façade set. I'm convinced amazing things can be done: the doc for facades has been updated by Ben recently, and the spec for facades v2 are published, which allow total customization via obj8 modelization. But even with facades v1 some neat things are possible. My building are now straight even on inclined terrain, I've adapted the textures to my liking, I'm trying some things for the roofs, and messing with the .fac files. If I can have something before the conference, I'll show you for sure. Pascal
May 14, 201313 yr Author Sounds good I'm also sure that we can make huge things about graphic quality & osm generated scenery. Let's face it, osm2xp buildings are ugly when you look close (not so pretty from an altitude neither), they are just textured lego bricks. I'm just lacking time , plus working alone isn't the best thing for motivation If you have ideas to improve things fell free to contact me.

I should be soon ready with a first shot at some easily accessible enhancements. My main issue is with roofs (you know what I mean). You've already done an excellent job here, but I can't help trying to enhance complex buildings as well. I suspect with facades v2 we could get inclined roofs even for complex shapes. But these kind of facades are much more complex to work with. I'll try to tinker with that later. I'll come back to you if I find some issue that can only be solved at the core of OSM2XP. For now, a lot (I mean a lot !) can be done with facades definitions files. Thanks ! Pascal
June 9, 201313 yr Hi all !Ben just posted this video on YouTube with the slides of his presentation: :good: Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
June 9, 201313 yr That's gonna make someone a really purty slideshow. They claim it runs well and the tester posting shots and videos has an ok computer but nothing special. They re-did all the autogen in the game (trees included), ground textures, and how the autogen is placed on those textures. It's the desnity of the autogen that could cause problems. I have to set the autogen at "normal" when using Orbx NA in Seattle with the NGX. With props I can go max settings. I'd expect Global to operate similarly because of it's similar autogen density. But, maybe not because in Seattle, it's looking at downtown that drops the FPS and Global won't be touching the default landmarks. We'll see.
