20 Terabyte Photo of United States

Featured Replies

Check out this site:TerraService.NetHere you will find 20 Terabyte photo of US. It includes a topo map, a 1-meter resolution photo, and 1/4 meter resolution images of 150 metro areas. When you first get there, just click several times (drill down) on the big map, soon the photos appear.Perhaps it has possibilities for FS scenery?jb

20 Terabytes? I think I'll upload it to the library here :)Thanks for the link. Looks neat. It couldn't be used for wide-area mesh, but it would be good for detailing smaller areas.

Howdy, the Terraserver orthophoto mosaics have been used by quite a few scenery designers (including Richard's Georender series, if I remember correctly) for local photoreal textures and/or accurate placement of rivers, roads, etc. There are tutorials and utilities available, for how to merge and colorize Terraserver tiles (see http://www.scenery.org/Default.htm and the Avsim scenery design forum). The images are neat but have the problem that they come in UTM projection, whereas FS requires geographic (lat/long). For smaller projects, the distortions are negligible but for larger areas one would have to use pre-processing software to change projections. There are two sources I know of (pointed out to me by others) that offer free satellite imagery in lat/long projection. The resolution isn't as good as the TerraServer data but these images can be used directly in Ground2K4 or other landscape scenery utilities.1.) A false-color Landsat 7 (30-m) mosaic of pretty much the entire planet (requires a free plugin for your web browser): http://www.earthetc.com/ecwearth/asps/ecwe...orld/landsat7422.) SPOT satellite (10-m) mosaics of parts of the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia: http://geoengine.nima.mil/ To see the SPOT coverage, click on "NGA Coverages", then "DOI 10m", then "Update Map".Cheers, Holger
