Out of simming for 2 years, finally back in and bought MD11

Featured Replies

Hey All,I've been out of simming due to real world flying for 2 years! However, a beta invite got me back into it. While I'm not a huge fan of FSX, that's what I'm using for now.So, the first plane I purchased? The PMDG MD-11....However, I can't even use it!I downloaded the combo pack finally, and went to install the FSX version. It asked for my details, which I entered. As I went to install, it asked to install C++ 2008 or something like that, and it said it succeeded. Then, I went to install the MD-11. It looked like it started fine, asked me what type I wanted and I chose, and then I walked away. I came back about 10 mins later, and the installer prompt/gui had just disappeared. I thought maybe it installed, and it does appear in FSX. The problem is that, I can't even use any buttons, the 2D panel is blank, and all the popups are too. Not to mention, the center gear truck is gone too.I tried to run the load manager, and that quits to error saying "Cannot run in parallel, run a script/prompt to debug".Now, I'm in the process of re-downloading the file.Anyone have any thoughts?Trying to install on a Win 7 64 bit Ultimate build, FSX SP2.Thanks,Kreg Earhart

Hi Kreg, welcome back to the fun. It sounds like you're doing the right thing and re-downloading the file. Who knows perhaps it was a bad download. The load manager should be run before the MD-11 (or before you enter the sim). I don't know if I ever saw that error but always load the manager, choose the save to file or save to FSX, then enter the sim. When you 1st installed it and started FSX for the 1st time, did you get the prompts? FSX should have asked if you want to allow all sort of things, which of course you should yes to. The C++ files that come with it will work fine, but couldn't hurt to download the latest 32 & 64 bit version (Both need to be installed when running a 64bit OS). Oh and I would install both the 2005 and 2008 (so four total). If things still don't work, try and load the default C172, make sure it's started and then bring go into the menu and load an MD-11. If you're still all whacked out, then I would check your windows event logs, and then run the installer again via right click and choose "Run as Admin" on the installer.Hope this helps,

Hi Dan,Thanks for the reply, it is much appreciated.I just tried the re-download thing, and to my dismay, no avail. As for the load manager thing, every time I've tried it, its says that. This is without FSX running. After the reinstall, everything seemed fine, but the installer never said successfully installed, click to finish. Starting up FSX it asks to approve the PMDG options DLL, the events, and one other, along with some gauge files. WIthin FSX, there are no PMDG menu options, all the 2D panels and such are blank, and I can't click any buttons anywhere in the plane. I guess it'll have to wait until after I finish work tomorrow, but I am hopeful someone on here can help me.As for loading, the prompts did appear. I have a default saved 172 flight, and after that loads up I select the MD11. I have also run the installer (and have FSX set to) run as administrator. I've tried to do a modify and repair install also. Where can you download those files?Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Now, time for bed, it's 130am and I have to fly tomorrow afternoon!Kreg

Have fun!Look around this site. You should install both the 32bit and 64bit for a 64 bit os and to be on the safe side with all the addons around, install both set for the 2005 and 2008.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyId=ba9257ca-337f-4b40-8c14-157cfdffee4e&displayLang=enI looked around the forum and can't find the post in my head but remember someone had this issue not too long ago. Unfortunately I don't remember what happened. To add to the C++ redistribs, I would also update your .Net framework. Just google it. The latest out should be 4.0.Make a backup of your FSX.cfg and then delete the working one and start it up. It's in your C:\Users\Dan(your name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX folder. You need to make sure you have show hidden folders to see the App Data folder. Check to see if that helps. If one of the trust parameters is missing in the cfg then that may cause this type of mayhem.Good-Luck!

Dan,Thanks for the post. Tonight after work (I live in Hawaii, so late mainland time) I'll try to install the 4 files you suggest. Thank you for the link.I'll also try the .Net one as well.Last night I tried to delete the FSX.cfg and have it rebuild. It asked me again to trust the dll's and .gau files. It asks for about 5+ PMDG ones, but it still the same old story. We'll try the .Net and C++ things tonight. Thanks for the help!

Hi Guys! Thanks again for all of your help. It turned out to be something with the C++ files. I did as you said Dan and installed all of the C++ files (also as Product Support suggested). I also installed .Net 4.0. So, one of those files saved me! She is a joy to fly! I was able to go from cold and dark, to a PHNL - KSEA flight without the manual, however it wasn't pretty or expeditious at all! Thanks again guys!

Glad you got it sorted, but please do read the manual. I'd argue it's required reading and would only serve to enrich your experience.Kyle

Yeah, I definitely plan to! You know how we are with new toys! Some things I still have to learn, such as flying from the VC. I manage to do okay, but the MD11 is a little slippery and you really have to pay attention to power settings, as you can't really hear a spool up! Also, I'll have to read it to see if there are faster ways to edit flightplans (such as the Boeing way of bringing a waypoint further down, to right below the one you want it to follow and it deletes the in between). Thanks for the help guys!

No real shortcut like the Boeings "cut, paste" type way. You have delete each waypoint at a time unless you just want to go direct to a further waypoint in the flight plan then press "DIR INTC", select the waypoint of choice then press insert.

I haven't tried it yet, but reading the ADV FMS guide, I "think" you may be able to do that, if you select the point you want to start with, and then type in the one you want to move right below it, using LAT NAV or something like that.

Late replyYeah, now you reminded me, if you go into the lat rev of a waypoint if I remember correctly it has a "next waypoint" field, I guess thats what you're refering too? I think I only used it once or twice way back when I first got the plane so I forgotten.
