Got my Tobii Eye 5 yesterday and got it set up. I have had several TrackIRs over the years, but Tobii Eye is better in a few key areas. First, you don’t need to wear anything. I was a bit skeptical about how well this really worked, but the second thing I really like about Tobii is it is even smoother than the latest TrackIR. Super smooth in fact. Third, the freedom of movement is much better. I constantly found myself reaching the limit.

In the flight simulation community, especially with the latest MSFS 2024 and X-Plane 12 releases, cockpit builders are constantly optimizing multi-monitor configurations for better immersion and space efficiency. One lesser-discussed but highly relevant technology is Dual-View LCD panels — displays that can show two completely independent video signals on a single physical screen.

	How Dual-View Works

Unlike standard split-screen software solutions (which just duplicate or stretch the desktop), true Dual-View hardware uses a specialized LCD panel with dual LVDS ports (often 2-port 40-pin configuration). The panel internally splits the active area into two logical displays — typically left/right or top/bottom — each receiving its own independent video feed from the graphics card. This is similar to how some commercial aviation MFDs (Multi-Function Displays) operate in real aircraft cockpits.

Key technical advantages for sim use:

Resolution example: 2560×1024 allows a clean 1280×1024 per view (or custom split), perfect for pairing a PFD with an ND, or an external view with an overhead panel.

High brightness (900+ nits): Essential for daylight cockpit simulations or home setups with bright ambient lighting — far superior to consumer monitors that wash out under direct light.

Single-panel efficiency: Saves physical space, reduces bezel gaps, simplifies cabling, and lowers overall power/heat in a multi-monitor rig.

Aviation-grade durability: These panels are often designed for wide viewing angles and stable performance in varying conditions, which translates well to professional-grade home cockpits.

	Practical Implementation in Simulators

	To make it work:

Graphics card must support outputting two separate signals to the dual LVDS inputs (most modern NVIDIA/AMD cards handle this via display port splitting or specific driver modes).

Windows multi-monitor settings treat the panel as two logical displays.

In MSFS or X-Plane, you position windows precisely (e.g., one view locked to “left half”, the other to “right half”) using tools like Little Navmap, FSUIPC, or custom Lua scripts.

Driver considerations: Some panels require specific LVDS timing or EDID overrides — community tools like Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) or NVIDIA Control Panel can help.

	Challenges I’ve seen discussed:

Alignment and bezel compensation (software edge blending isn’t always perfect).

Performance overhead if the GPU is already maxed with high-res scenery.

Compatibility with certain sim add-ons that don’t play nice with non-standard display layouts.

Has anyone here successfully integrated a Dual-View LCD into their home cockpit or professional flight training setup? What graphics card/driver combinations worked best for you? Any tips for MSFS 2024 window management or X-Plane 12 multi-view stability? I’d love to hear real-world experiences — this tech seems promising for reducing monitor clutter while keeping full instrument visibility.

For those interested in the hardware side, a real-world 21.5-inch Dual-View module I’ve been evaluating.

	Hi everyone,

I'm currently putting together a home cockpit and I'm trying to move away from cropping regular monitors for the instruments. Square aspect ratio just works so much better for the gauges and engine displays.

While looking for suitable LVDS modules I came across this 10.3-inch 768x768 LCD . It uses the standard 20-pin LVDS interface.

Has anyone here actually driven one of these in MSFS or X-Plane? What kind of controller/board are you using? Any issues with the low native resolution or mounting in a panel?

Would really appreciate any real-world experiences before I order one. Thanks!

What next?

To my surprise the other day my 5 year old LG 32 inch gaming monitor is now failing. Kind of shocked it only lasted 5 years but I guess that is the semi norm these days unfortunately and its a common problem with LG monitors apparently. It still works I have faint horizontal lines about 2mm apart and it screws up the text. Interestingly in the middle of the screen it tends to breath in and out and for a few seconds everything looks fine but it quickly comes back. I tried a different cable and checked the connections but I can put up a test pattern without anything hooked up and those lines are still there. So it must be some sort of internal fault.

This monitor is or was okay and it worked well for games and flight simming. I found doing other work on it like word processing and photo editing to be a bit of a handicap but doable. Its only a 2K panel which at 32 inches was a bit of an eye drain but again in flight simulation it was totally fine and the big size was cool. A completely new system including monitor is in the budget for the 4th quarter of this year. I thought for sure my current monitor would hold up but obviously not. So I can't decide if I want to go something 4K and fancy now or just replace this one with a cheaper 2K gaming monitor for now? Even worse I have not warmed up to the new style curved screen and I have heard real mixed results. Apparently they are really good at gaming but suck even worse for other work. By default I started looking for a regular flat 32 inch gaming monitor but they are pretty hard to find these days and no local store bothers carrying them. Ironically many if not all 4K gaming monitors are flat still but the prices. Spending between $700 and $1500 for a 4K monitor seems pretty crazy. Performance wise they promise a lot though. I might have to rethink this 4K thing in the future!

Not sure what I am exactly asking the community?

Should I be at all concerned about a curved monitor? Looks like I don't have much of a choice unless I opt out of the gaming monitor choice. Most regular duty monitors are still flat and ironically a 4K regular monitor is cheaper than a 4K gaming monitor. Of coarse you loose the gaming features but pretty much the only game I play is FS2024 so is a gaming monitor even really necessary? 15 or 20 years ago we just bought a good performing regular monitor and we never complained. All pretty confusing but one way or another my current monitor has to go. I plan to try it in FS tomorrow to see if the panel issue impedes my ability to use and enjoy the sim and if not maybe I can live with it for a while but if not it must be replaced. I am a big enough sim junky that I am not going to let a panel issue keep me from enjoying my computer flying.

Any real difference between a big name brand monitor and a cheaper generic monitor these days? At a big box warehouse membership store I can get a Samsung 32" 1K gaming monitor with solid specs for $249 USD. Reviews are a bit mixed but overall pretty good. On the Big River company website I can get a generic monitor 2K with good specs and good reviews for about $170. Both curved though!

Curved seems to be where its at these days. I just remember the short trend with curved TV's and it failed hard. Prices were high and performance was not good. Another hobby of mine is home theater so naturally the curved idea is a big who cares kind of thing and nobody makes a curved TV these days. A bit shocked all of a sudden every gaming monitor has to be curved. Just old school I guess!

I decided to shift to 16:9 aspect ratio of 4K (3840 x 2160) from 21:9 (3440 x 1440). In order to maintain FPS or improve FPS (I don’t use DLSS and/or any hacks) I dropped the render scaling from 200 to 150 to keep the pixel count in check. I was concerned I might lose some image quality, but after testing image quality was excellent (AA even better as it seems to prefer the 16:9 aspect).

	Old:

	3440 x 1440 at Render Scaling = 200 = 6880 x 2880 = 19,814,400 pixels

	New:

	3840 x 2160 at Render Scaling = 150 = 5760 x 3240 = 18,662,400 pixels

So fewer pixels being processed but image quality was actually better at 16:9 (3840 x 2160).

Another reason to switch is my BMD ShuttleDeck video recorder works better at 4K resolution and so does YouTube.

	Just sharing my results.

Is it worth 2-7 FPS in a 3D shooter? Heck if one is going to spend $5,000+ on a GPU, may as well go for the nVidia 6000 Pro at $8000 (and not sold out) and you get 96GB GDDR7 VRAM not a pathetic 32GB.

But there again, it is sold out … I keep thinking at some point the buyer market will be done with these prices … but year after year after year I’m proven wrong. There seems to be an inexhaustible number of folk willing to pay these prices.

Having bought my first gaming monitor I thought I would give Nvidia Smooth Vision a go - not because Prepar3D inherently needs to perform better on my setup but because I know from the racing sim I run and the occasional fps game what benefits high frame rates can bring as regards mitigating motion blur.

Well, it sure worked wonderfully in that respect - it felt like I was running an fps game! But it seemed to cause a problem. I could no longer land my aircraft well - or at least repeatedly well - with the main trouble being getting the flare and throttle modulation correct. I never had this problem until I tried Smooth Motion.

What I am not certain about is whether it is due to the inherently increased latency (since it is impossible to do what Smooth Motion does without increasing latency) or whether it is because those "fake" frames are giving me inaccurate information as to precisely what the aircraft is doing.

I went back to how I had it before and think I will chalk this down to an interesting experiment but not for me - unless someone had the same experience and could "resolve" it. It seems to me it would be wonderful if Smooth Motion could be enabled at all times when airborne and down to minimums and then at that point it goes back to only pushing out "real" frames. That would be the best of both worlds! I can certainly say I did enjoy the almost non-existent motion blur of the panning with it turned on but obviously being able to land the aircraft well and consistently is much more important to me!

I have a NVidia RTX 4070 which has 1 HDMI connector and 3 Display Port Connectors. I am using the HDMI and one display port for monitors currently. I would like to add a small monitor (maybe the size of a tablet) to run instrument displays on. I am struggling to find a monitor of that size with a Display port connection. Any suggestions?

I think I know what OLED is supposed to be good at w/ regard to no backlight bleed thru, but what about every other element of display quality compared of course to current standard LCD?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I am looking at Curved Monitors for my system. Do any of you have a curved monitors, and how does it work with Ms2024 ??

When setting up a flight simulator cockpit, most discussions focus on outside visuals, GPUs, and multi-monitor layouts. However, once you start working on dedicated instrument panels, the display format itself becomes a surprisingly important design decision.

In my own cockpit planning, I found that wide-format monitors are not always ideal for avionics or engine instrumentation. Many aircraft layouts—especially legacy or mixed analog/digital panels—are still designed around square or near-square display areas. Using a widescreen often leads to wasted space or awkward UI scaling.

A square 4:3 display format works particularly well for instruments like engine monitoring, navigation data, and system status pages. With higher resolutions such as 1600×1200, text and gauge markings remain sharp without forcing aggressive scaling in MSFS or X-Plane, which can sometimes introduce readability issues.

Another practical factor is physical integration. Dedicated LCD modules are easier to mount behind custom cut panels compared to full consumer monitors, especially when working with compact cockpit frames or enclosed instrument bays. During layout testing, I reviewed a 14-inch 1600×1200 square LCD module intended for flight simulator instrument panels as a reference option while evaluating different panel geometries and mounting depths.

I’m curious how others here approach this part of cockpit design:

Do you prefer square or widescreen displays for avionics and system panels?

How do you handle UI scaling for instruments across different aircraft?

Has anyone here built panels using raw LCD modules instead of standard monitors?

Would be great to hear what’s worked (or not worked) in real cockpit builds.

	Hello,

Been on 2020 for quite some time now but was wondering if i should be using vsync or locked fps. I have a rtx 4070ti super and a i9-10850k cpu. Currently use TAA and frame gen dx12. I’ve seen a mix so trying to get an idea what’s best. Don’t really wanna use dlss because I still see there’s annoying ghosting issues especially in the glass cockpit. My monitor is 144hz refresh rate and I fly in 2K 1440p resolution.

As I now have a very hefty RTX 5080, about the heaviest available, I just wondered how you guys are supporting your heavy cards.

	Simple adjustable post?

	More sophisticated bracket?

One of those fancy LED brackets.

	One of those horizontal devices?

Or maybe a vertical case mount with riser?

Or maybe you are a scary individual who doesn't bother and hard enough to challenge physics. 😉
